Bring Quality Back

Once upon a time, quality was a characteristic that was valued. You could make a pair of shoes last for years.

You could listen to an album all the way through without skipping tracks.

You could even only have two friends in your circle but they’d the most reliable squad ever.

Sadly, in 2017 quality products or people aren’t the wave anymore. Our culture is so fast paced and consumed with wanting everything that’s new. Everyone has such of “give me, give me” mentality that we don’t even appreciate what we do have. That’s why brands  literally throw out new products almost everyday without even taking the time to make sure that the products are the best quality. Our society is too concerned with quantity, that we forget about quality.

Forever 21 used to be my favorite go-to store. I could always count on them to have cute outfits that I could wear multiple times. Nowadays I know if I buy something from Forever 21, I’m guaraunteed one wear out of it. The quality is so cheap that it either rips or shrinks after the first wash. I’ve reached a point to where I don’t even bother to shop there anymore. But Forever 21 isn’t the only retailer like that. The retailer that I work at has gorgeous and trendy shoes and accessories. Although the product is eye-catching, the quality sucks. It’s more of the accessories than shoes, but there have been so many times that I’ve had to return or exchange an item because it broke. What blows my mind the most about retailers is that the price of the items are quadruple times the cost than what they are actually worth. You’re not getting your money’s worth but the retailers don’t seem to care. These companies make billions of dollars off of terrible quality clothing all because consumers keep purchasing them.

Another industry that lacks quality nowadays is the music industry. Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of talented artists in all genres. But there are only a few that put out quality projects. Talking about quality in music is very subjective. I may like a song that you think is trash and vice-versa. The way I’m using quality in describing music is if an album can be played all the way through with no skips. Or if a song can be played 100 times on the radio and it still not get old. That’s quality music to me. I’d also like to point out that there is a difference in between quality music and good music. For example, “You Was Right” by Lil Uzi Vert is GOOD song. The beat and the lyrics make me feel good inside and make me want to dance. But it isn’t quality to me. That’s not a song that I’d want to listen to over and over again. A lot of artists in the music industry today are not interested in putting out quality work. It’s almost as if everyone is putting out a new project or song every week just to stay relevant. An artist I believe who’s music is lacking quality nowadays is Drake. Drake is my favorite artist, I’ve been a fan since I was in 7th grade. It actually pains me to even critique him like I’m about to. In the early stages of Drake’s rap career, he put out masterpieces like “So Far Gone” and “Take Care”. Those projects don’t even compare to his latest album “Views From the 6”. Views had about 20 tracks on it and only a handful of them were good. “Take Care”, on the other hand, had major bangers. That’s definitely an album you can play all the way through. Then there’s artists like Future who have thousands of released and unreleased songs. He just recently put out two new albums within the same week. Did these albums have a vast amount of content? Yes! But was the content quality? NO! I personally think that artists should take the time to perfect their craft. As a fan, I’d rather wait a long time to hear quality music than wait a short period to hear crap music.

Lastly, nowadays there aren’t too many quality people. I look at my mom and she’s still best friends with people she went to elementary school with. Obviously people grow up and change so the people they surround themselves with change as well . But I feel like people switch up their crews every week! I’ve personally seen someone talk badly about another person and then the next day, they’re hanging out!?! I can’t speak for anyone else, but that’s not the type of person I ever want to surround myself with. Another thing I’ve noticed is that people find pride in being guarded and rude. Everyone wants to be a “savage” and have “no feelings” That’s something that I don’t understand. There’s nothing cool about being cold to people and acting like you have no emotions. Having no feelings is called being a sociopath, and that’s not something you choose to be!  I think this all comes down to each individual person. If you are a quality person, then you will be surrounded by quality people. There’s nothing wrong with being a nice and genuine person. You don’t have to put on an act of being tough, you can just be you!

In conclusion, our society doesn’t value quality anymore. Quality is something that is lacking in almost every aspect of life. It’s time for a shift in our culture and bring quality back. Although it will be more expensive, let’s buy quality clothing. Let’s tell our favorite artists know how we truly feel about their work. And Lastly, let’s start to be the change that we want to see!
